CHAPTER ELEVEN

What the hell just happened? Richard Bright stood under the hot spray of the shower, the steam curling around him. He couldn’t make sense of it.

Just, Ros.

Ros.

Her.

The woman – okay, so, the girl – who tortured him every single day and night of his existence.

Every man loved Ros. Every last bastard one of them. Why should he be any different? He loved her – from the very first pint that she had ever pulled for him, he had loved her with everything that he was – but she had never seen him like that.

At least, she hadn’t. Until tonight. Tonight changed everything.

Unless she was right. Unless he had dreamed it.

No. Surely not. He had a buzz on – he did most nights – but he wasn’t pissed. He wasn’t hallucinating. It had happened. The taste of her sweaty toes was still very much clinging to the inside of his mouth.

Yet still it didn’t make sense. How could she do that, just tap into his innate submissiveness, a trait that he had never shared with anyone, not even with his long-gone ex-wife or his few ill-fated relationships after?

“Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day,” he murmured dreamily under the hot spray of water. “Thy eternal summer shall not fade.”

Could a goddess like Rosalind truly love an old codger like him?

I’m not that old, he told himself hopefully. He was forty-four to her twenty-seven – only a seventeen-year age gap. That was quite normal in some circles.

Yeah. But I’m no James Bond.

And she was certainly beautiful and clever enough to be a Bond girl.

He closed his eyes, tilting his mournful face upwards to catch the hot spray, his thick, brown hair plastered to his scalp, not wanting to admit to himself that she was completely and utterly out of his league.

“Rosalind,” he whispered. “My beautiful Rosalind.”

His eyes snapped open, his body stiffening and his skin breaking out in a rash of goosebumps, despite the heat of the shower. Suddenly, he was on edge and he couldn’t say why. There was a certain chilliness behind the heat of the water, the horrible, creepy-crawly sensation that he was being watched.

A creaking noise reached his ears above the hiss of the water, and he spun around on the spot, every nerve ending on high alert, his ears straining. The frosted plastic of the shower cubicle obscured his view of the bathroom, but he was sure that he saw movement. It was subtle, like a light cloud passing over the sun, but he was sure he hadn’t imagined it.

Maybe Rosalind had come back. That was highly unlikely, however, and the strangest sensation of foreboding curled around him. He suddenly yelped in shock when the water pouring over him turned ice-cold. It did that sometimes, thanks to a faulty boiler that badly needed a visit from a plumber. Moaning, Dick gracelessly pirouetted on the slippery floor, fumbling to turn off the hard jet of freezing water.

As he turned, he lost his footing on the soap-slicked, plastic ground beneath him.
